About Project
Over 50% of the school age population in Nigeria will never set foot in the classroom. Already, girls make 60% of the out of school population in Nigeria, putting them at a dire consequence of financial independence and poverty. In communities where the safety of girls is threatened when they seek access to education.
The second chance education programme addresses this problem by focusing on providing a safe space within the community environment where young women, girls and adult women are provided with the essential skills and knowledge for self expression, in addition to basic literacy and numeracy skills using contextually-relevant materials. Beyond the scope of the basic literacy and numeracy skills, the second chance education programme encompassed vocational skills, life skills, Socio-Emotional Learning (SEL), psychoeducation, sessions on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights as well as sporting activities. The assumption was that through the varied activities, beneficiaries would learn how to communicate effectively, participate in activities that engage them mentally and physically, force them to think critically and solve problems, build their resilience through self-care and psychological wellbeing, improve self-awareness and assertiveness, and ultimately build their confidence.
